Apigenin

A naturally occurring flavonoid, abundant in chamomile, that binds to GABA-A receptors to support relaxation and sleep onset.

Clinical Profile

Apigenin is a flavonoid found in chamomile tea, parsley, and celery, and is considered the primary compound responsible for chamomile's traditional calming effects. It binds to benzodiazepine sites within the GABA-A receptor complex, producing a mild, modulatory (rather than forceful) calming effect.

Clinical Summary

Research indicates Apigenin reduces locomotor activity and supports the transition into deeper, restorative Slow-Wave Sleep stages without disrupting the natural sleep cycle.

Dosage Guidelines

50mg, typically taken 30 to 60 minutes before desired sleep time.

Safety & Side Effects

Considered very safe; no significant adverse effects commonly reported at supplemental doses.

Known Interactions

May have a mild additive sedative effect when combined with other calming compounds (e.g. Magnesium, L-Theanine) or CNS depressants such as alcohol or benzodiazepines.
