GABA

The primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, responsible for calming neural excitability and promoting relaxation.

Clinical Profile

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) acts as a brake on the central nervous system during times of stress. While it is naturally produced in the brain, supplemental GABA is often used to promote sleep, reduce anxiety, and theoretically calm overactive auditory nerve signals associated with tinnitus.

Clinical Summary

While highly effective endogenously, oral GABA has limited blood-brain barrier permeability. However, some clinical studies show subjective improvements in relaxation and stress markers, which can indirectly help individuals cope with the psychological burden of tinnitus.

Dosage Guidelines

100-200mg per day for stress relief; up to 750mg for sleep support. Best taken on an empty stomach.

Safety & Side Effects

High doses may cause a temporary tingling sensation (paresthesia) in the face or neck, shortness of breath, or drowsiness.

Known Interactions

Should not be combined with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other central nervous system depressants.
