- Primary Mechanism
- Absorbs water to increase stool volume and viscosity, mechanically stimulating peristalsis without bowel irritation
- Standardized Form
- Milled powder or capsules
Psyllium husk is derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant. Unlike stimulant laxatives that trigger colon contractions, psyllium is a bulk-forming fiber. It resists fermentation in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbs water to form a thick, viscous gel. This gel normalizes stool transit time, making it effective for both chronic constipation and mild diarrhea. Additionally, it binds to bile acids in the gut, which forces the liver to use systemic cholesterol to produce more bile, effectively lowering LDL cholesterol.
