Resveratrol is a stilbene polyphenol produced by certain plants, including grapes, in response to environmental stress or fungal infection, and is most commonly extracted from Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) for supplement use. It gained early mainstream attention through the "French Paradox" theory linking red wine consumption to cardiovascular benefit, which spurred substantial research into its antioxidant and cellular signaling properties, including proposed activation of sirtuin pathways associated with longevity in animal models. Human clinical research has since concentrated more heavily on measurable cardiovascular and metabolic endpoints, such as blood pressure and lipid profiles, than on the longevity claims that originally drove its popularity.

Clinical Summary

Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials report modest but statistically significant reductions in blood pressure and improvements in markers of insulin resistance, particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Evidence for effects in healthy individuals without existing metabolic dysfunction is comparatively weaker.

150-1000 mg/day across clinical trials, with most positive cardiovascular findings observed at 150-500 mg/day taken with food to improve absorption.
