Senna (Senna alexandrina) is an FDA-approved nonprescription laxative. It contains active compounds called sennosides, which irritate the bowel lining and stimulate colon contractions, producing a strong laxative effect. It is widely used in detox and bowel-clearing formulas but is strictly intended for short-term use.
Clinical Summary
Well-documented and highly effective for acute constipation relief. However, chronic use can lead to laxative dependence, loss of normal bowel function, and severe electrolyte imbalances.
Dosage Guidelines
15mg to 30mg of sennosides once or twice daily. Should not be used for more than 1-2 weeks without medical supervision.
Safety & Side Effects
Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea. Long-term abuse can cause melanosis coli (darkening of the colon lining) and potassium depletion.
Known Interactions
Can interact with diuretics, digoxin, and anti-arrhythmic medications due to the risk of severe potassium depletion.
