Shilajit is a blackish-brown resin that forms slowly from the decomposition of plant matter compressed within mountain rock layers, most notably in the Himalayas. In Ayurvedic tradition it is classified as a "maharasa," or super-vitalizer, and is composed primarily of fulvic acid, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, and more than 40 trace minerals. Modern research has focused on purified, standardized extracts rather than raw resin, given documented contamination risks in unprocessed forms. Clinical interest has centered on its potential role in mitochondrial ATP production, hormonal support, and recovery from muscular fatigue, an area of research still considerably smaller than more established adaptogens like ashwagandha.

Clinical Summary
Small randomized, placebo-controlled trials using standardized extract report increases in serum testosterone in healthy men and improved retention of muscular strength following fatiguing exercise protocols. The evidence base remains limited in size and number of independent research groups compared to longer-studied adaptogens.
Dosage Guidelines
250-500 mg/day of purified, standardized extract, generally taken with food. Raw or unpurified shilajit does not have an established safe dosing range.
Safety & Side Effects
Generally well tolerated in purified form; mild gastrointestinal upset has been reported. Unpurified or raw shilajit carries a documented risk of heavy metal and free radical contamination if not properly processed.
Known Interactions
No major drug interactions are well documented; caution advised for individuals with hemochromatosis given its mineral content, and for those on hormone-sensitive medication given its effect on testosterone.
