- Primary Mechanism
- Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes to reduce local prostaglandin synthesis
- Standardized Form
- Essential oil or topical analgesic blend
Wintergreen oil is extracted from the leaves of the Gaultheria procumbens plant. Its primary active constituent is methyl salicylate, a compound closely related to aspirin. When applied to the skin, methyl salicylate is absorbed into the underlying tissues where it acts as a localized non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), reducing the production of pain-causing prostaglandins.

Clinical Summary
Highly effective for localized pain relief, but carries a narrower safety margin than menthol due to the risk of systemic salicylate absorption if overused.
Dosage Guidelines
Used in small amounts as part of a blended topical analgesic.
Safety & Side Effects
Can cause chemical burns or severe irritation if applied heavily or occluded. Systemic toxicity (salicylism) can occur with excessive use.
Known Interactions
Strongly interacts with oral blood thinners (e.g., warfarin). Co-administration can significantly increase bleeding risk.
